Emergencies and certain unfortunate situations rush in and out of the healthcare facilities, that ranges from a slight fever to fatal diseases. Every nurse is a special tool to make care properly and easier as we are trained to do these types of things in a specific and prompt manner. While withholding every fear every step of the way, knowledge and confidence must help us, future nurses, to comply with our duty and promise, which is to care. In compliance, every step must be guided with compassion and accuracy of procedures to aid our patients. Now, as I continue, every phrase signifies the importance and its connection to the nursing profession as well as its collective variables to be correlated to expository writing and allow me to drive for our deeper understanding.

Nursing is a tough profession, as it needs precise and accurate knowledge and understanding to provide correct assessments and certain care plans for a certain patient. Along with this is a deep knowledge of handling and caring for various medical techniques, assessments, and aseptic procedures. But beyond all of this, being aseptic and proceeding to proper executions are the main points. Now to dig deeper, there are classifications and certain descriptions of being aseptic, which means being free from all types of contamination: medical and surgical asepsis. Now the medical asepsis contains hand washing which is considered the most basic and important procedure to avoid the spreading of microorganisms. The surgical aseptic technique consists of the process of sterilization where there must be the absence of pathogens and is most likely to be done inside the operating room for complete sterility as a surgeon or any other surgical staff will be able to have contact with bodily fluids and/or body masses and composition. Another example of classifying in the nursing profession is to constantly classify, identify, and define certain assessments and overall observations that allow nurses to provide the proper and suitable nursing interventions where identifying the level of burns, tissue damage, stages of cancer, and pain scale of the patient that signifies the discomfort level of the client.

In times when a nurse must explain the procedure that he or she must do to the patient, or either report their handled charts or patients to the next shift nurse and to the physician, defining the process and mechanism is the most important as it promotes clarity, precision and straightforward but at the same time must not do short cuts and must explain the whole procedure without missing a single step. Defining terms is vital for patient comprehension as this ensures that the client will be able to be notified and to know what procedure will be done to them, along with the explanation of alternatives, pros and cons, and expectations like for surgical and treatment procedures, therapies, and any other medical procedure as well as medication to be prescribed to the patient. Through this, the patient will be able to be educated which is one of the 10 rights of administering medications that must be followed in the medical field that ensures clients' safety and security at all times. In addition, the step-by-step process and the physiological process behind the procedure must be defined concretely and comprehensively with details to the patient for the client’s education, which is vital for effective and safe patient care.

Moving on to the expository techniques that are prominently used in nursing which include description, sequential, comparative, causes and effects, problem and solution, and as said earlier, classification. Starting forward to the sequential techniques as the usage of description and classification was explained earlier, the sequential technique talks about the procedures in a sequential manner which is important to notify and educate the patient about the procedure or course of action that the physician administered to the client. The comparative, talks about the comparison of two ideas that will be applied to the proper choosing of nursing interventions for a certain patient along with its accurate procedures and other factors to be considered before deciding on the assessment or intervention to be used, this technique connects with the cause and effects and the problem and solution as it is the root idea of comparing and contrasting certain ideas to come up what best for the client. These techniques are all vital in producing effective nursing care and assessment for the patient as this provides the client the right education about the treatment or intervention that a nurse or other medical staff will require them to do and also for some self-care activities that the client can do by themselves. As well as to educate the patient on the underlying conditions and what to expect before, during, and after that specific treatment option that allows them to understand their situation and to make informed decisions.

On the other hand, there are also some expository techniques like analogies, highly figurative language or terms, and persuasive writing that are not commonly used in formal situations such as the nursing profession this is due to certain reasons. It is focusing first on the analogies which focuses on the contrasting two ideas using metaphors to point out a certain definition or idea to a person where in the medical field, it will be the patient. In addition, it also uses an indirect understanding of an abstract concept that must not be followed in medical fields as it may need clarification. Following is the highly figurative language or terms that are clearly not allowed in professional situations as this again, results in misinterpretations, especially in critical and trauma situations. For persuasive writing, though nurses and other medical professionals must convince the refusing patients to receive the treatment for the betterment of their health and wellness, doctors and nurses must use an accurate course of action for the patient’s action and it may still cause some confusion in relaying and explaining the consequences and details of the treatment to the patient. These three expository techniques must not be used in medical settings as these techniques use abstract concepts where nurses or professionals in the medical fields must observe objective and factual approaches for the best course of treatment for their respective patients. In addition, medical professionals must use coherent, direct, and clear communication and language to avoid confusion and underlying conflicts.

In the field of medicine, strengths and knowledge are your source of power. As a future professional nurse, strengthening my courage to express myself with the boundaries of knowing what should be done or not at the right place and time, as well as the community that will be my readers can aid me to become a better expository writer. As said earlier, being direct, coherent, and concise will be one of the factors that will aid me to be a better writer and a better future nurse as it allows me to coherently communicate and express the right procedures to the client. In addition, having an organized objective and course of action will help me to construct logical information professionally in an objective tone so that my patients and colleagues will be able to understand.

Also, avoiding the usage of medical jargon will be helpful especially if I am talking to my patient to avoid misunderstandings and must be only used when necessary and can be aided with concrete examples. In expository writing, checking the accuracy and the reference date is very important as this ensures factuality, and if it’s up to date that will help me to achieve and follow such evidence-based practices withholding the usage of opinion-based concepts. To properly document and record the processes done to the client, I must have enough knowledge and understanding on what the do’s and dont’s that must be applied to the patient as each client will have a different health background and genetic connections that make them unique.

Overall, to give patients the best care possible, a nurse must possess a variety of knowledge, accuracy, and excellent communication skills. To guarantee patient safety, nurses need to have a thorough awareness of medical procedures, assessments, and aseptic practices. Explanations, patient education, and correct documentation of medical processes all depend heavily on clear and thorough communication. Expository methods that help with information transfer and patient comprehension include description, sequential organization, comparative analysis, and classification. However, since they might cause misunderstandings and confusion in healthcare settings, some explanatory strategies, such as analogies, highly figurative language, and persuasive writing should be avoided. For the betterment of our careers as future nurses, we can effectively explain procedures, educate patients, and ultimately deliver the best care possible by mastering the art of clear, succinct, and objective communication.
